Crankbait Fishing for Bass: Diving Depths, Line and Setup

Written by Atlas Editorial · Last updated

Choose a crankbait that dives 1–2 ft deeper than the bottom you are fishing, so it digs and deflects off cover — a squarebill for 1–5 ft, a medium-diver for 6–12 ft, and a deep-diver for 14–25 ft ledges.

Crankbait diving depths

Approximate running depths on a long cast with 10–12 lb fluorocarbon. Heavier line runs shallower.

Crankbait rod and line

  • Rod: 7 ft to 7 ft 11 in medium or medium-heavy, moderate (glass or composite) action so bass do not tear off the trebles.
  • Reel: 5.2:1 to 6.3:1 gear ratio — slower reels pull deep-divers down without wearing you out.
  • Line: 10–14 lb fluorocarbon. Each step down in line size adds depth.

Crankbait pro tips

Pro tip · Deflection

Bites come when the bait hits something and kicks off it. If you are not touching bottom or cover, change baits.

Pro tip · Current

On Tennessee River lakes, fish ledges when TVA is generating. Current positions bass on the up-current edge of the ledge; cast up-current and bring the bait with it.

Pro tip · Colour

Shad patterns in clear water, chartreuse/blue-back in stain, red craw in late winter and early spring.

Pro tip · Temperature

Squarebills fire from 55°F up. Deep-divers are a summer bait from 80°F+, when bass school on offshore structure.
