The Best Crappie Lures and Crappie Jigs, by Water and Season

Written by Atlas Editorial · Last updated

The best crappie lure is a 1/16 oz jighead with a 2 in soft-plastic body — shad colours in clear water, chartreuse combinations in stained water — fished at the depth the crappie are holding, which changes with water temperature.

Crappie jig sizes and bodies

Use 4–6 lb high-visibility mono or 6–8 lb braid with a short 4–6 lb fluorocarbon leader. Crappie bite on the fall, and a bright line lets you see the tick or the line jump sideways before you feel it.

Crappie lure colours

  • Clear water (4 ft+ visibility): smoke, pearl, shad grey, blue and white.
  • Stained water (1–4 ft): chartreuse with white, chartreuse with black, pink and white.
  • Muddy water (under 1 ft): black and chartreuse, solid chartreuse, dark colours with a bright tail.
  • Sunny day, clear water: go lighter and translucent. Cloudy or low light: go brighter or darker for silhouette.

Crappie rigs and presentations

Pro tip · Long-line trolling

Pull 1/16 oz jigs 50–80 ft behind the boat at 0.8–1.2 mph. Heavier jigs or faster speeds run shallower; slow down to get deeper.

Pro tip · Spider rigging

Six to eight long rods off the bow, minnows or jigs set at staggered depths, pushed at 0.3–0.6 mph over channel edges in late winter.

Pro tip · Vertical over brush

Hold directly over a brush pile and drop a 1/8 oz jig to just above the top of the cover. Crappie suspend over brush and look up.

Pro tip · Dock shooting

5–6 ft ultralight rod, 4 lb line, 1/32–1/24 oz jig. Pinch the jig, bend the rod and release to skip it deep under docks in summer.

Pro tip · Live minnow

Size 2 or 4 light-wire gold hook, split shot 12 in up, minnow hooked through the lips. The light wire bends free of brush.
